As I mentioned in my last post, the chakra framework can be a tool for healing and personal growth. I’m excited to unpack each of the seven chakras with you over the next series of posts.
Today let’s explore the root chakra.
At the new moon almost two weeks ago, I introduced the root chakra to my Return to Your Core membership. Since then our house flooded because a pipe was clogged with a root. It’s a mess around here with 20 plus fans, the flooring ripped up, our furniture and appliances pushed together.
Chakras can get stuck or lack flow and there also can be an excess.
In my house’s case, the root was blocking the water flow and since it had to go somewhere it came out the floor boards. Good news, we pulled the root out and the backup stopped.
The upside - we’re getting new floors!
Throughout this process I’ve felt calmer than expected. Perhaps it’s because I’ve been tending to my root chakra along with the Return to Your Core group.
The root chakra is located at the base of your spine at the perineum.
The color is red.
The element is earth.
The sound is OM.
The root chakra is associated with safety, security, and our foundation.
When we feel safe we’re unstoppable. Our nervous system gives us the green light to take action toward what we want in life. We feel at home in the world.
An unbalanced root chakra can manifest as anxiety, impatience, fear of change, and depression. When balanced we feel at home, grounded, safe, and stable.
I’ve been studying the nervous system, specifically the feminine nervous system, and one way for our nervous system is to be in good company and co-regulate with others.
When hosting a yoga class or moon circle, I tend to my energy to set the vibe of class. You can witness this energetic dynmaic in parenting too. Instead of matching the big emotions which esculates the situation, I stay calm and present when my littles (or at least try) and when I do, they slow down and calm.
It’s a priority for me to include practices like spending time in nature, yoga, walking, meditation, and being in supportive environments like therapy, ceremony, and other daily rituals to keep me grounded.
Here are 5 practices you use to work with the root chakra
Wear the color red
Chant the sound OM or listen it repeated on Spotify playlist
Breath in for 4 and out for 6. A longer exhale is grounding
Weed, garden, or cook a nourishing meal
Yoga poses that included your feet, legs, and hips - like child pose, warrior one, warrior 3,
Journal Prompts
When do I feel like I can be unapologetically me? How does this feel in my body?
When do I feel safe and secure? How does this feel in my body?
What practices make me feel present and grounded? Do more of these.
Thanks for reading and stay tuned. Next time we’ll explore the second chakra.
